League position: 9th This was Southampton's second win in their last six home games in the Premier League. The Saints scored more than one goal in a game at St Mary's for only the third time in this Premier League season. They now had 37 points from 29 games so far in this Premier League season; four fewer than at the same stage last season. Southampton manager Claude Puel said: "I think we could have had three penalties by half-time. I'm happy because our players kept on going and found a solution at the end."

Christian Benteke had now scored nine of his 11 goals in this Premier League season in away games. Palace now had 31 points from 30 games so far in this Premier League season; two fewer than at the same stage last season. Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce said: "I will be very, very disappointed, having worked so hard to get this chance, if we throw it away in the last eight games. We have eight games and I think eight points will be enough."
