Comments:

League position: 13th Newcastle United had now lost three consecutive games in the Premier League for the first time since October 2018. This was the Magpies' first loss in their last 12 home games in the top division played on New Year's Day since a 5-3 defeat against West Bromwich Albion in 1953. Ayoze Pérez became the first former player to score against United in the Premier League since Dan Gosling for AFC Bournemouth on 24 February 2018. Having already used their three substitutes, Newcastle United were reduced to ten men after 51 minutes when Fabian Schär was withdrawn due to injury.
