Promotion was gained owing to a controversial drawn game between Stoke and Burnley which ended in a 0-0 score line. It was reputed that there wasn't a shot on target throughout that match as both sides would be promoted if the result had stood. The controversy was resolved by extending the First Division by two teams. This was the last season of Test Matches as automatic promotion was introduced.
