Comments:

League position: 17th Newcastle United had now dropped 12 points from winning positions this season; the most in the division. They had won three out of their previous five Premier League games following a run when they had won just one in 11. United were now unbeaten in their last three Premier League games. It was the first time they had gone three league games without defeat since February 2015.

Comments:

League position: 20th Aston Villa had now gone 16 Premier League games without a win (lost 12). It extended the longest run without a victory in their league history. Villa would be bottom of the top division at Christmas for the third time in their history. They went on to be relegated in both previous seasons (1935-36 and 1958-59). Only three of the previous 23 teams to be bottom of the Premier League on Christmas Day had avoided relegation.
