They had now scored eight goals in their last 11 games in all competitions. Axel Tuanzebe was originally named in the starting line-up before suffering an injury in the pre-match warm-up. Marcos Rojo was promoted to the starting XI with Phil Jones taking his place on the bench.

League position: 1st After a run of 17 wins in a row, Liverpool failed in their attempt to equal the all-time record of 18 consecutive wins in the top division set by Manchester City in the Premier League between August and December in 2017. With this draw, the Reds had equalled their club record of eight consecutive wins at the start of a season in the top division; also 1990-91 in League Division One. Tottenham Hotspur retained the record for the most wins from the start of a season in the top division (11 in 1960-61 in League Division One). Adam Lallana scored his first goal for Liverpool since 21 May 2017 against Middlesbrough at Anfield in the Premier League. His last goal in an away game was scored at Middlesbrough in the Premier League on 14 December 2016. Sadio Mané scored after 44 minutes but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to a handball decision.
