This was Liverpool's first win in their last seven visits to Manchester City in the Premier League (lost four). As a mark of respect for the victims of the terrorist attacks on Paris the previous weekend, La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, was played before the start of this match. Premier League chief Richard Scudamore called it an act of “solidarity and remembrance” after the Paris attacks. Kick-off: 5.30pm

League position: 3rd This was the first time that Manchester City had conceded four goals in a Premier League games at the Etihad Stadium. The last time they conceded four goals in a home Premier League game was in a 5-1 defeat by Arsenal on 22 February 2003 at Maine Road. This was only the second time that City have conceded four goals in a competitive game at the Etihad Stadium after Aston Villa recorded a 4-2 win in the Capital One Cup on 25 September 2012. They had won 12 of their previous 13 Premier League home games.

League position: 9th Prior to this game, Liverpool's total of 13 goals after their opening 12 matches was their joint-lowest at that stage of a Premier League season. The Reds had now lost just one of their last seven Premier League away games (won three). Only one of their last ten games in all competitions had now resulted in a home win. Philippe Coutinho had now scored four goals in five Premier League appearances against Manchester City.
