League position: 1st Manchester City equalled their club record of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions. Sergio Agüero’s penalty was his 177th goal for Manchester City in all competitions to equal Eric Brooks' all-time club goalscoring record which had stood since 1939. This was now City's joint-best points return after the first nine games of a Premier League season (also 25 in 2011-12). The only team who had more points at this stage of a season were Chelsea (27) in 2005-06. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said: “In May, five points clear in first place will be significant, now it is not. If people come here thinking that in the twentieth minute we’re going to win 5-0 that’s not going to happen. We created more chances. We have to be stable and control the game and that’s what we did. It was so important for him [Sergio Agüero] to equal the record and soon he will break it and of course I will be happy to be in that moment with him.”

League position: 9th This was Burnley's first defeat in their last seven games in the Premier League. The Clarets had failed to score in only two of their preceding 12 games in the Premier League. They lost a Premier League game by a margin of three goals or more for the first time since a 4-0 loss at West Bromwich Albion on 21 November 2016. Burnley manager Sean Dyche said: "They are a fine side and I can’t say it [the penalty] affected the outcome. But although there is contact, I feel it is minimal. To get that high off the floor with your hands above your head is a skill in itself. If I kicked my kid in the garden he wouldn’t fall like that. There has to be a bit of almost what I’d call honour in the game. That’s out of the window because it’s not there."
