English clubs had now lost three of their last four UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League Finals (Middlesbrough in 2006, Fulham in 2010 and now Liverpool). This was only the second time in the last 11 UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League Finals that the team who scored the first goal had not won the trophy (Dnipro against Sevilla in 2015). This was Liverpool's 12th major European Final; six more than any other English club (seven Champions League/European Cup Finals, three Europa League/UEFA Cup Finals and one European Cup Winners' Cup Final).
