Comments:

League position: 15th This was caretaker manager Craig Shakespeare's first game in charge following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. Leicester City began this game in the bottom three. It was only the second time that the reigning Premier League champions have been in the relegation zone (also Manchester United in August 2007). Following leaders Chelsea’s win against Swansea two days earlier, the Foxes could no longer retain their Premier League title. Jamie Vardy's opening goal was City's first in the Premier League in 2017; a run of 637 minutes without a goal. With this result, the Foxes avoided becoming the first reigning English league champions to lose six consecutive league games since Everton in 1928-29.

League position: 5th Four of Liverpool's five Premier League defeats so far in this season have come against teams who started the game in the bottom three. After 26 games of this Premier League season, the Reds had conceded 19 goals in 11 games against teams in the bottom seven and seven goals in nine games against teams in the top seven. They had now lost five of their last seven league and cup games. Philippe Coutinho scored his first goal in his last 12 appearances in all competitions since November 2016, and his first away goal in the premier League since August 2016.
