Kick-off: 17:00 Local (19:00 BST) Assistant referees: Aristeu Tavares (Brazil) Ednílson Corona (Brazil) Fourth official: Shamsul Maidin (Singapore) Fifth official: Prachya Permpanich (Thailand) Man of the Match: Miroslav Klose (Germany) Hosts Germany booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals as two early goals from Lukas Podolski helped secure victory over 10-man Sweden. Podolski scored on just four minutes, driving home the loose ball after Sweden keeper Andreas Isaksson parried. And Podolski finished smartly after Miroslav Klose's pass on 12 minutes. Sweden's Teddy Lucic was sent off for a second booking on 35 minutes and their miserable day was complete when Henrik Larsson missed a second-half penalty. This was the first meeting between Germany and Sweden since Germany won the Euro 92 semi-final 3-2 in Stockholm. Current coach Jurgen Klinsmann played for Germany in that game.

Comments:

Germany maintained their record of reaching the last eight in every World Cup finals where they have competed, except 1938. Germany had yet to be beaten in the second phase of the World Cup finals.

Comments:

Henrik Larsson missed a penalty in the 53rd minute. With three failures, along with Brazil, Sweden now hold the record for the most missed penalties in World Cup finals. Teddy Lucic became the third Swedish player to be sent-off at a World Cup finals. He follows Stefan Schwarz and Jonas Thern who were dismissed at USA '94.
