Kick-Off: 21:00 Local (20:00 BST) Assistant referees: Yoshikazu Hiroshima (Japan) Kim Dae-young (Korea Republic) Fourth official: Coffi Codjia (Benin) Fifth official: Celestin Ntagungira (Rwanda) Man of the Match: Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany) Two long-range efforts from Bastian Schweinsteiger ensured hosts Germany overcame Portugal to claim third place. Germany took the lead when midfielder Schweinsteiger cut in from the left and drilled in a swerving shot. The Germans went two up when the lively Schweinsteiger's free-kick was sliced into his own net by Armando Petit. Schweinsteiger sealed the victory with another rasping shot from 25 yards and Nuno Gomes headed Portugal a late consolation after a Luis Figo cross. Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn came in for his 86th cap, while Figo, who was rumoured to have had an argument with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari before the match, was relegated to the substitutes' bench.

Comments:

This was Germnay's (including West Germany) fourth 3rd Place Play-Off in the World Cup finals. They have won three so now finishing third more often than any other nation. Third choice keeper Timo Hildebrand was the only member of the Germany squad not to take any part in the tournament.

Comments:

Portugal narrowly fail to equal their best-ever World Cup finals performance. They finished third in the 1966 finals in England when they beat USSR 2-1 in the Play-Off at Wembley with goals from Eusebio and Jose Torres. Costinha received four yellow cards which, along with Ghana's Asamoah Gyan, was the most shown to any player at Germany 2006. The only other player ever to receive four yellow cards at a World Cup finals was Bulgaria's Zlatko Jankov at USA '94. As a team, Portugal received a total of 24 yellow cards. They therefore breaking the previous record of 23 that was set Bulgaria in 1994.
