Following the previous campaign's title success, Fulham had now switched between the Premier League and the League Championship in each of the last five seasons. Aleksandar Mitrović had now scored 45 goals in 45 league appearances since the start of the previous season. At the sixth attempt following a promotion, the Whites avoided defeat in their first game back in the top division for the first time (previously in 1949-50, 1959-60, 2001-02, 2018-19 and 2020-21).

Liverpool had now gone behind in their last five games in the Premier League and narrowly failed in equalling the competition record of winning four consecutive games after conceding the first goal. The Reds selected six players aged 30 or over in their starting line-up for the first time in a game in the Premier League since 14 February 1994 at Southampton. Mohamed Salah became the first player to score in the opening round of games in the Premier League in six consecutive seasons.
