League position: 15th Chelsea had now lost six of their first 11 league matches of a season for the first time since 1978. The 1978-79 campaign ended in to relegation to the Second Division. The Blues became the first reigning champions to gain 11 points or fewer from their opening 11 matches of a top division campaign since Liverpool in 1984-85. They lost only one of the first 99 Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge played under manager Jose Mourinho. They had now lost three of the last five league games at the Bridge under the former Real Madrid boss. Chelsea had now won one of their last eight games in all competitions. In their 145th meeting, Chelsea scored their 200th league goal against Liverpool.

James Milner made his 400th Premier League career appearance in this game. Philippe Coutinho scored in the third minute of added time in the first half. Dejan Lovren replaced Adam Lallana in the first minute of added time in the second half.
