Blackpool's fourth successive defeat left them in their lowest position since the early weeks of 1990/91, while Brighton's continuing improvement took them back into the Third Division top ten for the first time since last November. The die-hard Albion fans who braved their long journey north despite a fuel crisis were well rewarded. The Tangerines inability to carve out clear chances, and their vulnerability to cross balls, aided a comfortable away win. The Seagulls opener came when Andy Morrison cleared a corner to the edge of the box, only to see Paul Rogers' powerful half-volley easily beat Phil Barnes. In practical terms, the game was settled on half-time. Gary Hart beat two defenders then making the most of the generous time afforded to him to choose his spot from seven yards. Blackpool improved as the game wore on but their only real threat came in stoppage time when Paul Simpson hit an upright from 30 yards.
