Chelsea sacked their manager, Ted Drake, who had had nine years with the club and who guided them to their only League Championship to date - 1954-55.
In the 1930s he was a famous centre forward with Southampton and Arsenal and with the latter won League and Cup medals and England caps. In nine seasons he scored 171 goals in 240 League matches then came the war. In 1945 he hurt his back in a match at Reading and the injury ended his playing career. Within a short space of time he began his managerial career with Reading.
