Alf Maitland, a Scottish born full
back, played for the Football League in their 5-1 win over the Irish League at Newcastle. At that time, and indeed for many years it was League policy to select only Englishmen for their representative teams. When the error over Maitland was discovered it was decided to let him play. He spent all his career in the north-east playing for South Shields 1919-24, Middlesborough 1924-25 and Newcastle United 1925-30. He appeared in 333 League matches - and scored 3 goals.
