Default FC United of Manchester - 2010/11

Last Sunday, FC United of Manchester were drawn against 2008 winners Portsmouth in the FA Cup 3rd Round, which will be the seventh match of their campaign.

United, a Northern Premier League side (Level 7), up to this point have won four qualifying round games, beat League One outfit Rochdale and then drew 1-1 away to League One leaders Brighton, taking the tie to a replay.

I did some research and this appears to be the most impressive cup run by a brand new club since Crystal Palace reached the Quarter Final in 1907 - only two years after being founded.

Despite there being an amateur team of the same name before them, that Palace side can be considered new, whereas Chelmsford FC were a reformation when they reached the fourth round in 1938/39.

There were also decent runs by Colchester United and Dagenham & Redbridge, but that took over 10 years, whereas FCUM were only formed in 2005.

Outside of Britain, Sporting Fingal from the Republic of Ireland won promotion and the FAI Cup in 2009, a mere two years after the club was launched. However, they started life in the First Division, right below the top flight.
