Premier League goal of the week: Aaron Wilbraham for Norwich City at Fulham

    - Not so much a goal of great quality or significance this week, but more the opportunity to recognise one of the Premier League’s unlikely unsung heroes.
    - Although the 32 year-old’s deflected 77th minute strike proved to be only a consolation as the Canaries lost at Craven Cottage, it was the much-travelled striker’s 100th career goal.
    - It was also his first in the Premier League meaning he has joined the elite band of players who have scored in all four English senior divisions.
    - Others to have completed the set of scoring in four divisions includes Brett Ormerod, Dean Windass, Ian Ashbee, Barry Lines, Glyn Hodges, Alan Cork, Kevin Gage and his Norwich City team-mate Grant Holt. ...

Goal of the Week – Peter Crouch for Stoke City against Manchester City

There’s little need for discussion or argument for this week’s Goal of the Week as the lanky striker’s stunning effort was immediately installed as a genuine Goal of the Season contender.

In many ways, the goal that threatens to de-rail the visitors’ title aspirations encapsulated many of Stoke City’s qualities. The spectacular opener may have come via a direct method but there was nothing crude about the end product. The England forward headed on a long clearance from keeper Asmir Begovic then took a return header from Jermaine Pennant by flicking up the ball and he then twisted to volley over Joe Hart from over 25 yards out.

It all happened without the ball touching ...

Our goal of the week goes to Didier Drogba for Chelsea against Stoke City

    - Following the recent controversial departure of manager Andre Villas-Boas, the long-serving striker handed Chelsea a much needed victory with an expertly taken goal.

    - The Stamford Bridge stalwart collected Juan Mata's through-ball 12 yards out and kept his cool to round City keeper Asmir Begovic and stroke then ball into the empty net.

    - On the day before his 34th birthday, Didier became the 22nd player to score a total of 100 goals in the Premier League.

    - This was Didier’s 220th Premier League appearance so making him the ninth quickest player to reach the three figures. Alan Shearer is top of the list having struck his 100th goal ...
  9. Premier League Goal of the Week: Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie against Liverpool

    by , 7th March 2012 at 04:29 PM (11v11 blog)
Thius week's Premier League goal of the week (and contender for goal of the season) is of course Robin Van Persie’s late winner for Arsenal at Liverpool.

    - The Footballer of the Year-elect made Liverpool pay for their own profligacy in front of goal at Anfield when he snatched victory for the Gunners with an expertly struck side-foot volley from Alex Song's cross from a narrow angle in the second of eight minutes of added time.
    - It was his 25th goal of the Premier League season and the tenth winning goal.
    - It was reminiscent of his stunning strike against Everton earlier in the season and was gleefully hailed by manager Arsene Wenger:

“When you see the ball landing at the feet of Van Persie you know he can deliver a special goal. He did ...
  10. Premier League goal of the week: Yakubu v QPR

    by , 14th February 2012 at 08:39 PM (11v11 blog)
The 11v11 goal of the week was scored by Yakubu for Blackburn Rovers against Queens Park Rangers.

    • Along with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ heavy defeat to West Bromwich Albion, the win against fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers lifted Rovers out of the bottom three, but where would they be without their leading scorer?
    • On his return from a three-match ban, Yakubu’s 15th minute opener took his season total to 14 goals.
    • Taking control of Steven Nzonzi’s flick-on with an amazingly deft touch for such a big man, surrounded by QPR defenders, the former Everton hitman spun and fired a right-foot shot into the bottom corner.
    • Worth his considerable weight in gold to Rovers’ worrying cause, manager Steve Kean was fully of praise for his burly striker:

    “If you ...
