    The current French side are nothing like as good as the World Cup winners of 1998 and it would be a surprise if they win this game against a German side which is unbeaten in 15 internationals.

    France v Germany stats:

    • There have been 17 goals in the 3 World Cup matches between France and Germany
    • Germany won the 1982 match on penalties after one of the most controversial incidents in world football history – the “tackle” by Harald Schumacher which Michel Platini thought at the time had killed his team-mate Patrick Battiston.
    • If they win this game, Germany will become the only nation to have reached the semi-finals in four successive tournaments.
    • Germany are unbeaten in 15 internationals (W10 D5 L0) and 15 World Cup matches (including qualifiers).

    Your author had the pleasure to attend the equivalent fixture for France in the 1998 World Cup, when France beat a stubborn Paraguay side with the first golden goal of the World Cup. France’s final victory in that tournament was heralded in the Mirror as “Arsenal Wins the World Cup!” due to the number of Gooners in the 1998 French squad.

    In this year's French squad we find Sagna (admittedly off to Man City), Giroud and Koscielny. On the other hand they are captained by Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris. France also have three-player contingents from PSG and Newcastle. So, clearly Arsene Wenger needs to arrange for the speedy transfer of Debuchy, Loic Remy and Lucas Digne, before France win the World Cup again to ensure we get that headline again. ...

    This will be the 1st ever meeting between France and Honduras.
    France have only won 1 of their last 9 games in the World Cup group stages (2-0 v Togo in 2006).
    Franck Ribéry was France's top scorer during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers with 5 goals in 10 games. He is injured & out of the French squad.
    Since winning the World Cup in 1998, France have failed to score in 3 World Cup openers, drawing two 0-0 and losing 1-0 to Senegal in 2002
    Honduras failed to score in the 2010 World Cup.
    Jerry Bengtson was Honduras' top scorer in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers with 9 goals in 12 games.
