    Lionel Messi wins the FIFA Ballon d’Or for the second time
    Confirming that he is the world’s current greatest player, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was named the winner of the FIFA Ballon d’Or for 2011.
    Lionel told FIFA.com:

    “I’m very proud to have won it three times, especially one after the other.
    “It’s hard to win one, let alone three. I’m very happy and this award gives me as much pleasure as the first.”


    Messi is, howeever, confusing the old Ballon d’Or with the new FIFA Ballon d’Or. The Argentine footballing genius won the Ballon d’Or in 2009 and the new FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2010 and 2011.

    Michel Platini is the only player to have ever won the prestigious Ballon d’Or for three years in a row (1983 to 1985). ...

  2. Starts record starts Giggs year

    The 2011-12 season has already seen more additions to the remarkable records held by Ryan Giggs and the Manchester United legend has begun the New Year with another entry to his outstanding collection.

    In his first start of the season, Ryan extended his record as the oldest scorer in Champions League history in the draw at Benfica.

    In doing so, he also became the first player to score in 16 different Champions League campaigns.

    Giggsy ended the year by maintaining his unique record of scoring in every Premier League season in United's win at Fulham on 21 December.

    His latest record came in his first game of 2012.

    Tonight is an exciting night for football statisticians as we get ready to count the goals going in towards the magic 20,000 milestone! It is testimony to the advance of the football statistics into the mainstream to see the furore and excitement around this event - a far cry from some of the earlier Premier League scoring milestones which passed with litle more than than a raised eyebrow.

    So who will be the lucky scorer to be able to choose which charity benefits from the £20,000 windfall? Below are our usual predictions for scorers and assisters, which take on a special significance as the Premier League total currently stands at 19,989.   4. 20,000th Premier League goal

    A major Premier League milestone is coming up with the 20,000th goal to be scored in the next two days. Thanks to AFS master statistician John Russell for the below list of previous goal milestones in the Premier league.

    It would be fitting for Robin Van Persie to score the 20,000th but whoever scores will be able to donate 20,000 pounds to the charity of their choice, courtesy of Barclays.
