On this day in football history

1897 Birmingham had their lowest recorded attendance when only 500 turned up to see them play Manchester City. In an ironic twist of fate their local rivals Aston Villa opened Villa Park on the same day.
1927 Rangers signed Scottish international inside-forward Bob McPhail from Airdrieonians. In a peacetime career which spanned 1924 to 1939 he became the highest scoring inside-forward in Scottish League history with 307 goals in 462 matches. This was second only to centre-forward McGrory's 410. He won a Scottish Cup medal with Airdrie in 1924 and, after his move to Rangers, he won a further six Cup medals, nine League Championship medals and 17 Scottish caps. His Rangers record read 223 goals in 354 matches. Joined the Ibrox coaching staff when he retired during the Second War.
1958 Death of Billy Meredith at the age of 81. He was a legend in hi own lifetime and was considered one of the greatest outside-rights of all time. He was signed by Manchester City in 1894, moved to Manchester United in 1905 and returned to City in 1921. Appeared for Wales 51 times between 1895 and 1920 missing only one game during that period; against England in 1906 when he was suspended for allegedly offering a bribe to Alec Leake of Aston Villa. He won FA Cup medals with both Manchester clubs and made his last appearance in the competition in 1924 when he was nearly 50 years old. Known as the Welsh Wizard he played in 669 League matches and scored over 200 goals.
1958 At the age of 16 years and 163 days Peter Bullock became the youngest player to appear for Stoke City when he played against Swansea City.
1977 Liverpool become only the third English team to reach a European Cup Final when they beat FC Zurich 6-1 on aggregate. They will meet Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final.
1993 After crowd trouble in the recent World Cup Qualifying match between Turkey and England at Izmir, the home nation are banned from holding future international matches at that venue.
1995 In the European Cup Winners Cup semi finals Arsenal's David Seaman saves three penalties in the shoot-out against Sampdoria. This enables Arsenal to win the shoot-out and progress to the final.
1998 Furore in the English press as Glen Hoddle the England manager reveals that Eileen Drewery, a well known faith healer, has been working with the England Squad.
