On this day in football history

1890 Blackburn Rovers centre-forward Bill Townley scored the first ever FA Cup Final hat trick as his side beat Sheffield Wednesday 6-1. Wednesday were still members of the Football Alliance at the time.
1924 Billy Meredith appeared for Manchester City against Newcastle United in the FA Cup Final just four months short of his 50th birthday.
1930 Huddersfield Town centre-half and captain Tom Wilson was sent off during the First Division match with Derby County for arguing with the referee. Sentences for dismissal were stiff at the time and he was lucky to avoid missing the FA Cup Final against Arsenal at the end of April. Just such a fate had befallen his former colleague Billy Smith before the 1920 Final. Wilson joined Huddersfield from Sunderland in 1919 and remained with them until 1932 when he moved to Blackpool for half a season. Played in the side which won the League Championship three years in succession between 1924 and 1926 as well as four Cup Finals in 1920, 1922, 1928 and 1930. Unfortunately only the 1922 side lifted the trophy when they beat Preston North End at Stamford Bridge. Appeared in almost 500 matches for Huddersfield (447 in the League) but was only capped once: against Scotland in 1928. Died in February 1948.
1960 Geoff Twentyman, Liverpool centre-half, transferred to Ballymena as player-manager. First came into prominence with Carlisle United for whom he made his debut in 1948 and moved to Anfield during the 1953-54 season. During his stay in Ireland he played for the Irish League four times. Returned to Carlisle in 1962 and retired as a player in 1964 after 329 Football League matches and 20 goals. Had a short spell as manager of Hartlepools United.
