As Chelsea draws closer to the Premier League title – see record of previous winners

It is very sensible to conclude that the Premier League title for 2016/2017 will be won by Chelsea. When a team of Chelsea’s calibre is at the top of the table at this stage, it’s very difficult to push them off. This becomes even more difficult when it is Tottenham that is making the push. The remaining fixtures for the two teams also have a lot to say about this title. Chelsea still has Middlesbrough, West Brom, Watford and Sunderland to play, while Tottenham will still play West Ham, Manchester United, Leicester City and Hull City. So, no matter the odds on this two and the football odds comparison, Chelsea is on course to win this one.

If Chelsea succeeds in capturing the title, it will maintain its second position in the list of the clubs that has the most trophies. Since the inception of the Premier League, which saw all the English teams in the top tier of the Football League resign to join the new Premier League, Manchester United has won the title more than any other team. From winning the maiden edition of the renamed and reorganised competition, and the edition that followed, they have gone ahead to win the title 11 more times, making it 13 in whole. They have also succeeded in winning it in 3 successive seasons twice.

The first team to thwart Manchester United’s hold on the Premier League Title after the first two years in the 1994/1995 season was the now relegated Blackburn Rovers. After two more years of Manchester United wins, Arsenal came in to win it in the 1997-1998 season. This was followed by United’s first three consecutive titles between 1998 and 2001 – a feat repeated  from 2006-07 to 2008-09.

Never Won It

One significant thing about the history of the Premier League is the ordeal of Liverpool. It is the only high profile team in the traditional big 4 that has never won the Premier League.

Number of Teams

The Premier League, however, did not start with the number of teams currently playing it. It started off with 22 teams before it was trimmed down to 20. But the number of teams that go on relegation and the number that is promoted has remained the same. The league has featured a total of 47 clubs since it was established and Manchester united, Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal have participated in each of the 24 editions.

Title Sponsorships

In terms of sponsorship, the league was sponsored by Carling from the 1993-94 season to the 2000-2001.

Barclaycard took up the sponsorship from there until the 2004-05 season when the sponsorship was changed to FA Barclays Premiership. Following the end of the 2015-16 season the idea of a title sponsor was abandoned as the Premier League decided to pursue a “clean brand” strategy.”
