The third round of the Carabao Cup ended Thursday night September 27, with a surprising loss from the team that has been dominant in the Premier League for the last few seasons. Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool all advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, but EPL leader Manchester City was eliminated after an unexpected 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.

The Gunners move on

Reiss Nelson, a winger for Arsenal, gave them the perfect start against Brentford when he scored a goal only eight minutes into the match. The team led by manager Mikel Arteta ultimately had enough to hold on and win 1-0.

Aaron Ramsdale, who just lost his number-one spot to David Raya, kept a clean sheet for this match, and midfielder Emile Smith Rowe, who was given the start, picked up some valuable minutes.

Blues advance

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea and Brighton engaged in action. After mistakes from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo, Brighton had two significant scoring chances in the first half. However, the two strikers for the Seagulls in Joao Pedro and Ansu Fati failed to take advantage of these opportunities.

In the second half, Chelsea attacker Nicolas Jackson put his team in front, making up for Brighton’s squandered opportunities. After an hour, he again had the ball in the net, but he was unfortunate to be called offside, and the goal was not awarded. The final result was 1-0 in favour of Chelsea.

Liverpool overcomes their poor start

Championship leaders Leicester City shocked the Anfield fans going down early. Three minutes into the match, Kasey McAteer scored a fantastic goal past goalie Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp must have spoken some wise words to his squad at the halftime break since they staged an exciting comeback in the second half. Following an assist from summer acquisition midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo tied the score. Then in the 70th minute an unbelievable rocket from midfielder Dominik Szoboslai gave the Reds a 2-1 lead. Later in the match, Diogo Jota added his name to the scoresheet when he backheeled the ball past Leicester goalie Jakub Stolarczyk to secure a 3-1 victory.

Other Cup news

West Ham, Fulham, and AFC Bournemouth, three Premier League teams, advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup after defeating Lincoln City, Norwich City, and Stoke City, respectively.

A League One team, Lincoln, believed they had grabbed the lead in the first half against West Ham, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Then Tomas Soucek, a midfielder for West Ham, scored the game’s only goal to give the east Londoners a 1-0 triumph.

The Blackburn Rovers ousted Cardiff City with a commanding 5-2 victory, and Everton defeated Aston Villa with their 2-1 triumph to secure their place in the fourth round.

City shocked

The game at St. James’ Park where Pep Guardiola’s team, Man City, faced an abrupt and unforeseen third-round loss to Newcastle, remains the biggest surprise of the third round. Man City are the three-time defending EPL champions and have blown out of the gate this season, winning their first six league matches. Their last loss was on August 6, when they lost to Arsenal on penalties in the finals of the FA Community Shield.

In the upcoming Carabao Cup round four matches, Manchester United will host Newcastle in a replay of last season’s final. Unbelievably, Manchester United was drawn at home for the 12th time in a row in an English domestic cup tournament.

Many bettors who bet on Man City to win the cup are sorely disappointed now that the team is out of the tournament. Replacing them as the new betting favourites according to various UK betting sites to win are Liverpool and Arsenal.

In other Carabao Cup matches, Liverpool will compete in an away game against Bournemouth, Arsenal will play West Ham at home, Chelsea will host Blackburn, and Burnley will meet Everton at Goodison Park. Fulham will face a difficult challenge against Ipswich Town. Port Vale and Mansfield are paired up at Field Mill. And with a chance to advance to the round of eight, League One team Exeter will host Middlesbrough.
