Born in Senegal but bought up in France, Lamine began his career at Toulouse in the 1998-99 season.
He spent a short time on loan at Marseille at the start of the season but came back to complete 25 matches in that campaign.
Lamine left at the end of that season and joined Rennes at the start of the 1999-2000 season.
His performances in the centre of the Rennes defence earned him international recognition and his solid performances established him as Aliou Cisse's partner at the heart of the defence.
He is a solid and uncompromising defender with excellent ability in the air where he has proved a powerful weapon in attack, notably scoring a vital goal in an African Nations Cup win over Egypt.
Lamine joined Newcastle United in March 2008 with a contract to the end of the 2007-08 season.
