After being brought to Arsenal by Arsene Wenger, Nicolas looked to have world-class potential and played an important role in the double success of 1997-98.
However, he failed to settle in at Highbury and left in acrimonious circumstances.
In 2001, he joined Liverpool on loan from Paris St Germain but his performance wasn't good enough to persuade manager Gerard Houllier to sign him and he moved on to Manchester City.
Nicolas joined Bolton Wanderers in August 2006 with a four-year contract that was extended to June 2011 in August 2007.
He joined Chelsea in January 2008 with a contract to June 2012.
