Hermann played for Wimbledon against Tranmere Rovers in the opening game of 2000-01 before he moved back into the Premiership to join Ipswich Town for a club record fee and went straight into the team for the game at Tottenham Hotspur.
He went on to miss just two games through an injury caused by overstretching in an attempt to clear his lines in the home game with Leeds United but took part in every other Premiership match for Town, scoring a goal against Manchester City at Maine Road when he headed home a corner.
Earlier, he thought he had netted in the game with Bradford City at Portman Road and made a celebratory dive into the crowd but, unbeknown to him, Mark Burchill had got a touch to his goal-bound header and claimed the goal.
Hermann played in central defence or as the left-sided wing back and his performances in the latter position allowed him the freedom to go marauding deep into the opponents half - an aspect of his game that endeared him to the Town fans.
He was runner-up in the supporters' 'Player of the Year' vote and he continued his international career with Iceland, captaining them on occasions.
Hermann's contract at Charlton Athletic was extended to June 2007 in May 2005.
He joined Portsmouth in July 2007 in a two-year deal that was extended to June 2010 in June 2010.
