Claus had another fine season with Southampton in 2000-01 when he was an ever-present for the club in all competitions despite fracturing a cheekbone in October after which he was required to wear a protective mask.
Now established as a top-class defender his partnership with Dean Richards continued to flourish as one of the most formidable in the Premiership.
An unflappable central defender who loves to surge upfield with the ball, he was recalled for Norway and played in the friendly with Northern Ireland in February.
Claus' contract at Southampton was extended to June 2007 in February 2004.
