As a highly rated central defender, John made his long-awaited breakthrough at Chelsea during the 2000-01 season.
In October 2000, he won his first England Under-21 cap against Finland.
Tough in the tackle and commanding in the air, John has the confidence to constructively play his way out of trouble and is capable of hitting long passes to attacking players on either flank.
John's Chelsea contract was extended to June 2009 in November 2004 then to June 2012 in July 2007 and to June 2014 in August 2009.
He was voted PFA Player of the Year 2005.
